Swap it Out! The Best Antennas for the BaoFeng UV-5R

As most users of the BaoFeng UV-5R handheld dual band radio know, the stock antenna that comes with it leaves much to be desired. The bands it picks up are not that clear or strong and the signals that it emits are on the low unclear spectrum as well.

The radio itself is still awesome so the antenna being less than stellar is a small issue that is easily solved with swapping out the original version for something better. Take a quick look at some of the best antennas for the BaoFeng UV-5R.

The Tram 1185 is a mobile antenna that you place on your car but it works expertly with the BaoFeng UV5R and nearly any other handheld radio. It transmits 2 meter 144-148 MHz VHF and 70 cm 430-450MHz UHF efficiently with a max power rating of 75 watts.

The Tram 1185 is a very affordable option that works just as well as some of the more expensive options. The transmission that it gets with the BaoFeng UV-5R is really excellent and can receive bands that are very far out and will come through crystal clear. The Tram 1185 is also perfect for police scanners as well as SDR USB receivers too especially since it will be used most often while mobile.

This is a simple antenna that is well constructed and does the job right. It uses a 3 inch magnet mount with 12 foot RG-58 coaxial cable and PL-259 connector to attach to the car. You do have the option of permanently attaching it as well if you feel the need. The antenna unscrews from magnet with regular 3/8-24 thread screw driver very easily. As far as we can tell it seems to be pretty durable and able to hang tough through weather and car washes.

It works perfectly with the BaoFeng UV-5R as well as many other handheld radio brands. This high performing crowd pleaser is listed at a price that is beyond reasonable. It is almost shocking when you actually use it to see the great quality first hand.

It is able to transmit on 136-174 MHz VHF and 400-470 MHz UHF bands easily while improving your transmit power. You will notice that you are able to pick up distant repeaters and stations that will be much clearer and louder with the ExpertPower. It will also add miles of range even in an urban setting with buildings and houses to work around.

The ExpertPower antenna will connect to your BaoFeng UV-5R with a female SMA connector allowing you to get more gain with this than most stock antennas. It is a very flexible and light weight option especially when compared to the one that comes with the radio itself. We think this is a great option for everyday use and carry.

It is a dual band Ham radio antenna that is excellent quality for a super low price. It is a great choice for those new to Ham radio and for those that are in search of a replacement for the less than stellar antenna that is included with the UV-5R.

The Hypario 771 is definitely compatible with the BaoFeng UV-5R as well as many other handheld radios. The length of the antenna is about 15 inches, which is a tab bit more than average but still within a reasonable range. It is also much more flexible choice compared to some other choices out there and definitely more so than the stock antenna that comes with the radio.

It is able to receive 396mm high grain dual bands like a pro when you connect to the UV-5R with the SMA female connector. You will be happily surprised at how truly great it is for picking up local repeaters up to 30 miles away. We noticed that it was even able to do its job when surrounded by urban terrain as well. It is a great antenna for a really great price.

The Secuda is a dual band extendable whip antenna that is very flexible, extra portable and great for a wide variety of radios beyond just the BaoFeng UV-5R.

This antenna is fully retractable and when fully extended has a length of about 14 inches long and 4 ½ inches when it is retracted. You can use it either extended or retracted depending on your band needs. When it is extended you can hit 2m bands and when retracted 440 bands for example. The choice is yours depending on what your signal needs are at any given moment. Just plug it in with the SMA female connector and go.

The Secuda receives 144 MHz VHF and 430 MHz UHF bands while using 10 watts of max power and has about 2.15db of gain. You will be able to easily hit repeaters up to 35-40 miles away even in hilly terrain or urban areas with this antenna and it can really make a difference in transmitted signal too. We are not ones to pick favorites around here, but if we had to this would be it.
